Work References That Workshops Actually Use
Workshop owners rarely want a long narrative letter. They want to know what machines or systems you handled, whether you worked alone on site, and how you dealt with unfinished tasks at shift end. Ask previous supervisors for those specifics.
Dates matter. Gaps are less damaging when explained with training, caregiving, or relocation. Vague months raise more questions than a short, plain sentence.
If your prior work was outside Germany, translate role titles carefully. A ‘technician’ title can mean very different scopes. Pair the title with concrete tasks: cable pulling, PLC panel wiring, sanitary rough-in, MIG welding on structural steel.
Contactability still counts. A mobile number or email for a former foreman is more useful than a corporate HR mailbox that never replies. Warn referees that German employers may call during morning shop hours.
